Donald K. Emmerson is director of the Southeast Asia Forum (SEAF) at Shorenstein APARC and a senior fellow at FSI. He is interested in the comparative politics and international relations of Southeast Asia, with particular reference to Indonesia. Subjects of his research include regionalism, Islamism, democratization, and U.S. foreign policy. In 2005 he addressed international conferences on Asia in the 21st century, convened in Cambodia, Malaysia, and Thailand. In 2004-2005 he served on two working groups on U.S. policies toward Asia and on a SEAF-co-sponsored National Commission on U.S.-Indonesian Relations. In 2003-2005 he lectured at Cornell University, Columbia University, and Princeton University, among other venues. In 2004 and 1999 he helped monitor voting in Indonesia and East Timor. He has testified several times before Congress on Asian affairs. He has been quoted widely in the media. He received a BA in public and international affairs from Princeton University, and an MA and PhD in political science from Yale University.
