Gi-Wook Shin is director of the Shorenstein APARC and an FSI senior fellow. In October 2007, Dr. Shin was appointed the Tong Yang, Korea Foundation, and Korea Stanford Alumni Chair of Korean Studies. He also directs the Korean Studies Program at Shorenstein APARC and is associate professor of sociology. His research centers on colonialism, nationalism, development, and international relations with a focus on Korea. Before coming to Stanford, Shin taught at the University of Iowa and the University of California, Los Angeles. He served as acting director of the UCLA Center for Korean Studies, as a guest columnist for the U.S. editions of the Korea Times and Korea Central Daily, and on other councils and advisory boards in the United States and Korea.
Shin is author or editor of six books and his articles have appeared in many academic journals. His new book on the origins and politics of ethnic nationalism in Korea will be published in March 2006 by Stanford University Press. His co-edited volumes, North Korea: 2005 and Beyond and Historical Injustice and Reconciliaiton in Northeast Asia will also be published in spring 2006. Shin's other publications include Contentious Kwangju (2004), an edited volume on the Kwangju uprising that occurred in South Korea in May 1980; Colonial Modernity in Korea (1999); "Agrarian Conflict and the Origins of Korean Capitalism," in the American Journal of Sociology (1998); "Social Crisis in Korea," in Korea Briefing 1997-1999; and "Asianism and Korea's Politics of Identity" in Inter-Asia Cultural Studies (2005). He is also co-editor of the Journal of Korean Studies. Shin is currently completing a book project on mass media and U.S.-ROK relations. The project examines U.S. media coverage of Korea and Korean media coverage of the United States from 1992 to 2004.
Shin lectures widely and gives seminars on issues ranging from Korean nationalism and politics to Korean-American relations. He received a BA from Yonsei University in Korea, and an MA and PhD from the University of Washington.
