The Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (Shorenstein APARC) at Stanford University seeks to fill the position of Takahashi Senior Research Scholar in Japanese Studies to actively develop and promote Japanese studies and research at the Center. The position is made possible through the generosity of Henri H. and Tomoye Takahashi. 

Qualified candidates will have experience working within a broad range of topics related to contemporary Japan including (but not limited to) analysis of issues related to political economy, domestic politics, security, international relations, and comparative governance.  Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated potential to make significant policy-relevant research contributions to the study of contemporary Japan as well as to develop a program in Japanese Studies.

The Takahashi Senior Research Scholar is expected to be in residence and will take part in Center activities through the academic year. S/he will also have the responsibility for developing and managing cooperative relationships with Japanese academic and policy research institutions. S/he will work closely in coordination with the director of Shorenstein APARC and other faculty.

Two types of candidates are desired: (1) a proven scholar in the fields of social science; and/or (2) a Japanese expert with senior policy or practitioner experience either in the United States or Japan.

Initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes an attractive benefits package.

Qualifications

 Qualified candidates must possess:

• A professional or academic background in issues related to contemporary Japan, with demonstrated capacity in analytical and policy-relevant research in an area of politics, economics or security with an emphasis on the political economy and international relations of contemporary Japan.
• A Ph.D. or commensurate record of professional accomplishment.
