Two scholars consider the role of the humanities in Southeast Asia

Former FSI-Stanford Humanities Center International Visitors Thitinan Pongsudhirak (Thailand) and Anies Baswedan (Indonesia), both leading academics in their respective countries, recently considered the role of the humanities and the “hard” sciences in contemporary Southeast Asia. During an interview with SEAF director Donald Emmerson, Baswedan described the historically strong humanities foundation in Indonesia and the country’s need to develop fields such as engineering.
