Research Interests
children's health policy; disparities in health outcomes by race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status; welfare use and childhood trauma; the effect of managed care regulations on utilization of healthcare services
Jia Chan is a research analyst at CHP/PCOR. She is working with core faculty member Paul H. Wise on child health policy research projects focused on three main areas: pediatric trauma hospitalization, trends in the hospitalization of high-risk neonates, and trends in the hospitalization of children with special healthcare needs. She previously worked with CHP/PCOR associate Mark W. Smith and with Rachel Kimerling -- a clinical psychologist at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System's National Center for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder -- on research that examined welfare use and childhood trauma in California. She also worked with Yu-Chu Shen, a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research, on a meta-analysis of hospital ownership; and with CHP/PCOR fellow Laurence Baker on research that examined the effects of managed care regulations on the utilization of health services.
Chan previously worked as an analyst for the Canadian federal government, in the Applied Research and Analysis Directorate at Health Canada. She received a Hon BA in economics and sociology as well as an MA in economics, both from the University of Toronto.
