Xiaohong (Iris) Quan's research interests are in technology and innovation management, research and development (R&D) activities, corporate strategy, entrepreneurship, and economic development. Her dissertation is an in-depth study on the recent surge of multinational corporations' R&D labs in China and proposes a hierarchically specialized R&D structure as an effective means of IP protection for MNC R&D labs in weak IPR regime countries.

In addition to her dissertation research on the globalization of R&D in China, Quan also worked at the Institute of Management, Innovation, and Organization, at the Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley, with Professosr Henry Chesbrough and David Teece. They are involved in an Alfred. P. Sloan Foundation project on the business and innovation models of the semiconductor industry in the United States and China.

Quan's previous research projects, completed under the supervision of Professor AnnaLee Saxenian at the University of California, Berkeley, focused on the Chinese software industry in transition (supported by London Business School), and local and global networks of immigrant professionals in Silicon Valley (supported by the Public Policy Institute of California).

Quan holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. She received her masters degree in economics, and her bachelors degree in science, both from Peking University, China.
