Shorenstein Postdoctoral Fellowship program grows
In the coming academic year, the Shorenstein Postdoctoral Fellowship program will double in size. The four incoming fellows represent the best of the next generation of contemporary Asia scholars. Their research ranges from civil society and authoritarian governance in China to ethnic conflict in South Asia, and Korean migration and identity to election politics in Japan. Read more »

Matt Augustine Selected as Northeast Asian History Fellow, 2009-2010
The Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center is pleased to announce that Matthew R. Augustine has been awarded the Northeast Asian History Fellowship for 2009-2010. This Fellowship is made possible through the generosity of the Northeast Asian History Foundation in Korea. The Fellowship supports a scholar to conduct research and writing on a historical subject that has an impact on modern and contemporary Northeast Asia. Read more »

Southeast Asian Studies at Stanford: A rising profile
SEAF NewsFive Southeast Asia scholars are slated for residence at Stanford for the upcoming academic year. Shorenstein APARC and the Southeast Asia Forum will host four of them: three were selected under the Lee Kong Chian NUS-Stanford Initiative on Southeast Asia, and one is a recipient of a 2008-09 Shorenstein Postdoctoral Fellowship. A fifth scholar will be on campus as a National Fellow of the Hoover Institution. Read more »

After 60 years, Pakistanis struggle to find right course
Op-ed: The San Jose Mercury News on August 16, 2007Two countries with a common and ancient civilization, India and Pakistan, celebrated 60 years of independence from colonial rule this week. At the time of independence, both countries were in danger of collapsing from internal and external threats. This greatly influenced both countries' subsequent turn toward centralism - in India's case, statism, and in Pakistan's case, army rule. Read more »
