Conditions for equitable development in Southeast Asia
SEAF NewsThe Southeast Asia Forum looks forward to the August publication of The Institutional Imperative: The Politics of Equitable Development in Southeast Asia by former Shorenstein Fellow Erik Kuhonta (2003–04). In his new book, Kuhonta argues that the realization of equitable development hinges heavily on strong institutions and on moderate policy and ideology. Allen Hicken of the University of Michigan praised The Institutional Imperative, saying: "This boldly comparative book will be widely read, widely assigned, and widely debated in the field. There are few comparable works out there.”

Shorenstein APARC announces three new political economy titles
Two new groundbreaking political economy publications are now available from the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center: Going Private in China: The Politics of Corporate Restructuring and System Reform in the PRC and Spending Without Taxation: FILP and the Politics of Public Finance in Japan. A third, The Institutional Imperative: The Politics of Equitable Development in Southeast Asia, is forthcoming in August. Read more »

Barbara Crossette, veteran New York Times foreign correspondent, wins 2010 Shorenstein Journalism Award
Shorenstein APARC has awarded its 2010 Shorenstein Journalism Award to journalist and author Barbara Crossette, who has spent much of her distinguished career covering the plight of the poor in developing Asia. Crossette will accept her award on May 14, and will also deliver a speech on the vulnerable side of South Asia, where economic growth all too frequently outpaces human progress.

Veteran journalist Barbara Crossette wins 2010 Shorenstein Journalism Award
This annual award, which carries a cash prize of $10,000, honors a journalist not only for a distinguished body of work, but also for the particular way that work has helped American readers to understand the complexities of Asia. It is awarded jointly by the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Center at Stanford University, and the Shorenstein Center on Press, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard University, part of the Kennedy School of Government. Events have been hosted alternately at both centers.

Southeast Asian Studies at Stanford: A rising profile
SEAF NewsFive Southeast Asia scholars are slated for residence at Stanford for the upcoming academic year. Shorenstein APARC and the Southeast Asia Forum will host four of them: three were selected under the Lee Kong Chian NUS-Stanford Initiative on Southeast Asia, and one is a recipient of a 2008-09 Shorenstein Postdoctoral Fellowship. A fifth scholar will be on campus as a National Fellow of the Hoover Institution. Read more »
